The Storybook Playhouse

In May of 2011 Carroll County Ferst Foundation for Childhood Literacy gave away a “adobe” playhouse specially designed and inspired by the children’s book Skippyjon Jones by Judy Schachner. The playhouse was on display for the month of April in front of the Carrollton Cultural Arts Center. The drawing was held at the end of Mayfest on May 7, 2011.

The playhouse has been built by R&R Enterprises and painted and decorated by a volunteer group of talented artists with the Carrollton Art Guild; Bill Leslie, Ursula Lingefelt, Mary Rogers, Martha Martin, and Noel Stewart. Alan Kuykendall provided the paint.

We successfully raised $3400. All the funds raised are used to provide FREE, new, quality, age appropriate books for registered children in our county between the ages of 0-5. Each child gets the joy of receiving a book in the mail each month! These books are available for ALL young children in Carroll County. While we provide these books for FREE to children, the cost to the foundation is $36 per child per year.

We currently serve approximately 2500 of the 8000 children eligible in the county.
Carroll County Ferst Foundation has been sending books to children since 2005. We are proud to say that children enrolled in this program are not only learning the love of reading but are also scoring 5-7 points higher on the kindergarten readiness test than children not in the program. Our goal is to one day reach all the young children in the county and help families participate in early reading together.
